There is no one exact way of cutting Formica, but depending upon each person’s convenience and the effectiveness of the process, we have prepared a list of 2 processes that you can use to cut it down.
Nevertheless, before ever stepping into the actual process of cutting, we suggest you take a few steps that will help you cut the Formica down more efficiently.
The two most effective ways are as follows:
The very first process that we suggest you go for is using a circular saw to cut Formica. This is probably the most effective process that anyone can do simply by some practice. Here are some steps in this process that will help you to successfully complete the process:
Formica sheets generally come between the sizes of 1/16 and 1/32 inches of thickness. They can be 8, 10, 12 feet long and almost 3, 4, and 5 feet wide. If you want to have a sheet even smaller than this, you will get it up to a minimum of 3x8 feet.
We suggest you first measure out the surface that you need the Formica sheet for and then buy a sheet that you think would be suitable for the surface.
After that, you have measured the exact measurements of the surface that you want to cover with a Formica sheet; the next thing that you should do is to mark the exact dimensions on the sheet with the measuring tape.
This step is important as it will not let you cut the wrong-sized sheet for the surfaces.
Place Masking Tape on the Line
Then, use some extra layers of masking tape at the edge of the Formica sheet, where you will start cutting it down. If you are not able to see the lines from the tape, make sure to remeasure the mark on the top of the tape.
Lay the sheet on a Flat, Rigid surface
The next step is to lay down your Formica sheet onto a flat and rigid surface. You can use a scrap piece of plywood or OSB and consider it as a table to cut your Formica sheet. It will help you place your sheet in the right position.
Note: Do not use cement surface for placing the sheet as It is not a good surface to cut on.
The next step that you have to follow is that use a circular saw, or even the laminate shears ad cut down the sheet into large pieces roughly. Ensure that you do not cut a curve with the saw. Cut down the form of the surface that you want to cover with the sheet.
After you have cut down Formica into the desired shape, install it onto the surface.
Trim the sheet
Next, use a jigsaw with a fine blade and trim the sheet to make any rounded cuts.
Smooth the edges
Take a belt sander that comes with a grit of 100 and smooth the edges of the sheet. These sanders can be heavy to operate, so you can also choose to sand the edges with small metal files or even by hand.
This method is comparatively simpler and easier than the first one that we have just explained. Follow these simple steps, and you will get the process completed.
- Cut the sheet into 1/8 larger than the size that you actually need for your surface.
- Remove the masking tape for the cuts with the saw.
- Install Formica onto the surface
- Trim the sheet into the exact size that you need for your surface.
- Clean off any rough edges with any flat metal file. These edges might have occurred while you cut the sheet. Cleaning will help you get a smooth surface.
